It’s made of people. In all their frustrating, imperfect, and complicated glory. <br/>Don’t get me wrong. Systems are smart. Automation has its place. Creating functional processes will do a lot for your project or business.<br/>But at the end of the day, you still have to deal with people.<br/>One of the most critical aspects to building an audience for your business is making high-quality connections with other web publishers. From SEO to reputation management to growing traffic to your site, connections matter.<br/>Which leads us to today’s topic. Here’s how you can make high-quality connections with bloggers and other content publishers in order to find a wider audience for your own content. <br/>You don’t have to suck up or turn into some weird networking-addicted phony. Here’s what to do instead:<br/>The 3 Foundational Building Blocks<br/>Before you can start making connections, you have to build from a place of strength. Make sure you have these elements in place before you start reaching out, or you’ll find that your networking takes you in the wrong direction.<br/>1. Build something worth talking about<br/>Influential people — whether they’re celebrities, business leaders, or web publishers with large audiences — virtually always have one thing in common.<br/>They have a lot of people coming forward who would like to engage their attention.<br/>If you’re known for doing something interesting and useful, it makes it a million times easier to make the connections you want to make.<br/>Josh Kaufman created the Personal MBA to empower professionals to educate themselves more effectively, quickly, and cheaply than they could with a traditional MBA. That’s remarkable.<br/>Amber Rogers created GoKaleo to help women recognize the predatory tactics of fitness and diet gurus, get off the self-hatred bandwagon, and think critically about health, nutrition, and fitness. That’s remarkable.<br/>Adam Baker and Grant Peele produced the documentary I’m Fine, Thanks, showcasing the lives of dozens of people who have worked to free themselves from complacency and traditional assumptions. The film inspires and challenges viewers to take a hard look at their own lives. That’s remarkable.<br/>None of those people has any trouble making connections with influencers … because they’ve done something that lots of people will want to know more about.<br/>Do something epic — even if it’s epic on a micro scale. One great project will open doors you didn’t even know existed.<br/>The simplest way to do something epic? I bet you know the answer to this one. And yes, a genuinely interesting blog absolutely counts.<br/>2. Be a good egg<br/>Anyone can get social media attention by being an ass. And, as we have seen again and again, many do.<br/>But making an ass of yourself only gets you attention … it does nothing for your influence. <br/>All of the networking advice in this post depends on you being a good egg.<br/>Be positive. Share content that’s helpful. Put your best foot forward. Make more friends than you do enemies. <br/>It’s fine to hold some controversial opinions. In fact, next week we’re going to talk about how that can be a great way to stake out a remarkable position with your audience.<br/>But if you pick fights 90% of the time, you’ll become known as someone who only knocks down. You need to be known as someone who can build.<br/>Be nice until it’s time to not be nice. ~Dalton’s Rule #3 from Road House<br/>3. Be interesting<br/>Everyone likes to hear “I love your work.” But if that’s the sum total of what you have to say, the conversation fizzles fast.<br/>(There are a few influencers who can spin your love of their work into an hour-long self-appreciation monologue. Thank goodness, these people are pretty rare.)<br/>Have a point of view, think critically about your topic, ask interesting questions, and stay informed. <br/>No matter how crowded your topic, there’s always room for someone who can think and speak intelligently about it. <br/>The 3 Places You’ll Create Connections<br/>Now that your foundation is set, you need places to actually get out and find your influencers.<br/>4. Spark the connection on Twitter<br/>Right now, Twitter is one of the best venues for sparking connections with content publishers. It’s not as popular with the general public as Facebook is … but it’s often more popular with bloggers and content creators.<br/>Remember your foundation. Be helpful, be charming, be interesting, and point to remarkable things. (Including remarkable things created by other people.)<br/>Twitter works because it’s easy to find your favorite influencers and it’s a low-risk environment. It’s relatively easy to approach even folks with large audiences … just “@” them. <br/>It’s also a noisy environment, so it can take some time to make yourself heard. Don’t let that worry you. Get out and start putting your friendly, useful face forward.<br/>5. Deepen the relationship on Facebook or Google+<br/>Twitter is great, but 140 characters is a pretty significant limitation.<br/>At some point, you’ll want to deepen connections by going further with the conversation on a platform that supports that. Depending on who you’re talking with, Facebook and Google+ are two great venues right now. <br/>(Although for your influencers, it may be Tumblr or Reddit or a particular online forum. Focus on the principle, not the platform.)<br/>Longer-format platforms allow for more complexity and better continuity. Contribute to a conversation worth having. Remember your foundation.<br/>6. Do some serious deals in meatspace<br/>“Meatspace” is the cyberpunk term for what boring normal people call the real world.<br/>You can make some amazing connections online, but if you can swing it, always try to take things face-to-face at some point.<br/>Conferences are a great way to solidify lots of connections over a couple of days. Meet for coffee, or a drink, or breakfast. Have conversations in hallways. <br/>When you get a chance to meet face to face, take it. It often creates a whole new level of engagement that can last for years and yield surprising benefits.<br/>The 3 Don’ts<br/>It wouldn’t be a good list post if I didn’t throw in a couple of warnings. There are a few things you can do that will make your efforts at connection much less successful. <br/>Avoid these three in particular:<br/>7. Don’t whine<br/>Oh, you’re a blogger? What do you complain about? ~Julien Smith<br/>It’s so easy to fall into a pattern of constant whining and complaint on social media. <br/>Resist. Strongly.<br/>Whining, as any parent can tell you, is profoundly irritating. And so often, what feels like “making conversation” to us comes across as whining to the poor suckers on Facebook or Twitter who are reading us.<br/>We all need a little pity party sometimes. Call a friend and ask her for coffee (and give her fair warning that you’re in a whiny mood.) Don’t make a habit of dumping your bad day all over your social media connections.<br/>8. Don’t gossip<br/>If you don’t have anything nice to say, come over here and sit right by me.<br/>Talking about others behind their back is so seductive. Most of us do it, and most of us secretly find it rather delicious.<br/>But it’s dangerous.<br/>When you tell a long, unflattering story about someone I like, you’ve damaged your ability to connect with me. And you may have no idea you’ve done it.<br/>You’ve also taken a very real risk that I’ll run back and tell my friend what you’ve been saying.<br/>Your career (and your psyche) would be better off if you simply never talked about anyone when they weren’t present.<br/>That goal’s a little lofty (and I’m far from there myself, trust me), but try to get into the habit of thinking twice (or three times) before you share a juicy story. The reputation you save may be your own.<br/>9. Don’t squee all over your shoes<br/>I stole this phrase from the lovely and remarkable Pace Smith. <br/>The thing is, I know where you’re coming from. I’m a fan girl too. I’ve got my own heroes, and I have to fight that urge to babble when I meet them.<br/>But if your hero is worth your admiration, she probably gets a little weirded out when people treat her as something Better-than-Human. <br/>Again, it’s great to let people know you’re enjoying their work. Enthusiasm is a lovely quality. Step #3 can be helpful here. If you’re geeking out about the topic (rather than about the person), you can often find some common ground.<br/>And one last point …<br/>10. It doesn’t always work the way you thought it would<br/>Way back when I started my first blog, I secretly imagined that one day I was going to have tea & crumpets with Seth Godin every day. <br/>Turns out I can’t really eat crumpets … all that gluten’s no good for me. Also, possibly more to the point, Seth just wasn’t all that interested. (To be clear … he’s always been very nice. Just not daily-crumpets-level nice.)<br/>On my path, one of my goals was to some day develop a good working relationship with Seth Godin. Things didn’t work out exactly how I had visualized. But a bunch of other good stuff happened on that path, and I did end up building great working relationships with lots of other amazing people.<br/>You have to follow the path you’re actually on. Which sometimes bears only slight resemblance to the one that was originally in your head.<br/>The plan is nothing; planning is everything. ~Dwight Eisenhower<br/>Do have goals. Do have some folks in mind that you’d love to create professional relationships with. <br/>Then do a bunch of epic stuff, be a good egg, know your topic, and make yourself useful, and see where the real path leads. <br/>It’s going to go somewhere good. I suppose if you look closely enough, what’s being said is links are all that matters.<br/>Of course, content is what really matters. Content that gets links, according to the gatekeepers.<br/>So, I’ve written a free 30 page report containing some ideas on how you can satisfy the gatekeepers (or actually, your readers and blogging peers – the people who truly matter). What’s Wrong With Steve Rubel?

<!--[[CDATA<br/--><br/>Steve Rubel had a rather nasty reaction to my free Viral Copy report. It’s obvious he hasn’t actually read it, because if he had, he wouldn’t be able to make the completely wrong-headed assertions that he does. But what I really don’t understand is his intra-day flip-flop on the subject of traffic.<br/>Here’s Steve this morning:<br/>Over at ProBlogger, Aaron Brazell has written an outstanding tutorial on how to integrate tags into your blog and why this is important. I tag nearly every post and I have been seeing my traffic from Technorati’s tag pages climb ever since.<br/>But here’s Steve tonight, in his hysterical attack on me entitled “It’s Not About the Traffic!”:<br/>However, I guarantee if you regularly add value to the community, your traffic will grow. But don’t get it into it just for the traffic and, going a step further, don’t pay a lot of attention to your traffic data. I don’t nearly as much as I used to. This was one of my key learnings over the past year.<br/>I agree 100% about adding value, Steve. That’s exactly what the report says to do (you really should read it). But devoting a post to gaining more traffic from Technorati in the morning, and then ranting that traffic doesn’t matter in the evening? Strange.<br/>Keep in mind folks, Steve is where he is today (Edelman and all) due to a cheap PR stunt back in 2004, less than two months after he started blogging. If you don’t remember, on May 25, 2004, Steve swore off all mainstream media for a week, vowing to read only blogs. Back then, Jeff Jarvis called it a “bogus gimmick” and a “PR stunt without substance” (link here, scroll down to the Carb News post on the old Buzz Machine).<br/>Steve used a clever little PR gimmick (that would never work for an unknown blogger today, mind you) to literally propel himself to the enviable point he is now. Nothing wrong with that, unless of course, two years later, you look down from your A-List perch and proclaim that traffic is now bad.<br/>Except from Technorati, of course.<br/>I’m going to write this off as a bad day for Steve. Or maybe he’s just trying to do me a big favor, in which case I thank him. <br/>Subscribe to Copyblogger today!

Social Proof: Herd it Through the Grapevine

<!--[[CDATA<br/--><br/>No, that’s not a typo in the title above, as we’ll soon see. But first, some disturbing news.<br/>It’s become fairly well-known that unfortunate events reported heavily in the media lead to other similar unfortunate events due to copycat behavior. Suicides, murders, and school shootings tend to occur in alarming clusters once the news about the initial event gets out.<br/>What you may not know is that after a suicide is publicized, deaths by single-car accidents spike. When a murder/suicide is heavily reported, head-on car collisions and airplane crashes go up immediately afterward.<br/>What’s going on here?<br/>Sociologist David Phillips calls it the “Werther” effect, named after a character in a Goethe novel who committed suicide, which itself prompted a rash of suicides in Europe over 200 years ago. Phillips established the link between newspaper reports of suicides and the resulting copycats using data accumulated between 1947 and 1968, and also discovered the concurrent fatal automobile and airplane accident data. He theorized that these drivers and pilots were also committing suicide, but couldn’t bear the stigma that an overt suicide would bring to their families.<br/>Scary, huh?<br/>This phenomenon is one of the more dramatic illustrations of social proof, a powerful psychological mechanism by which we look to others to guide our own actions. In the suicide examples, the influenced people already wanted to kill themselves, and seeing someone else take their own life provided them with definitive motivation.<br/>Here are two more research-based examples of social proof in action:<br/>A person in distress is better served by having only one person available to help them. If several people observe an ambiguous situation where someone may be in trouble, they will look to each other to see how to act. If no one takes immediate action, the likelihood that no one will do anything at all grows, which is called pluralistic ignorance. If only one person is in the vicinity to help, the level of personal responsibility is higher, and aid is more likely offered without hesitation.<br/>A child is more likely to learn a new skill (such as swimming) if he observes a child of similar age that engages in the activity. Before this happens, one-on-one parental instruction will likely fail to influence a reluctant child. As children become teenagers, the importance of peer behavior and approval needs no elaboration. Likewise, adults are more likely to ethically act in concert with those they feel to be of a similar education level, income bracket and social status, rather than looking to a purely independent moral compass.<br/>So, does the misspelling of “heard” in the post title now make sense? Social proof is at the root of what’s been dubbed herd mentality in humans, with every “cattle” and “sheep” reference that goes along with it. Our need to look to other people for how to behave is an important key to the growth and maintenance of societies, so it’s not necessarily always reason for disdain.<br/>Despite all the dramatic examples, social proof can be a very useful adaptive trait. It helps us solve problems and formulate shared values, and it really only hurts us when we fail to apply critical thinking to important choices and actions.<br/>From a marketing standpoint, social proof is the basis of both buzz and large sales figures. Without it, there’d be no “grapevine” in the first place. It’s also why testimonials are so essential in direct marketing.<br/>Social proof is ultimately the most powerful force involved in growing a successful business blog that helps you sell products or services. The quality of your content is still the most important element, but other subtle influences may well dictate whether you turn a new visitor into a subscription or bookmark.<br/>For example, displaying your large number of Feedburner subscribers will likely lead to that number growing more quickly than if you hadn’t (while displaying a low number may hurt you). It’s fairly well known that blog reader comments often lead to more comments, so you should encourage reader interaction at every opportunity. A similar domino effect occurs with popular del.icio.us tags, inbound links from others and Digg votes.<br/>In other words, the ultimate digital expression of society itself is the emerging social media, which will most certainly evolve into more sophisticated replications as it grows. Sometimes we create a conversation, sometimes we add to it, and sometimes we just follow along. Such is the fastest growing aspect of the Internet, and such is life.<br/>As we continue with the Blog Triggers series, we’ll examine other important naturally-occurring aspects of blogging that can help get the ball rolling until the magic of social proof kicks in. No Email Taxation Without Requisition

<!--[[CDATA<br/--><br/>The Electronic Frontier Foundation and a host of others have released an open letter to AOL asking the ISP to reconsider adoption of the proposed Goodmail “email tax” that made big news not long ago. At the time, I said I didn’t care about this, as it would only speed the inevitable adoption of RSS for content delivery.<br/>But upon continued reflection, it’s simply a flat-out disturbing development. AOL’s plans represent only the first step down a slippery slope towards fragmentation and corporate control of the Internet’s historical open access, and we shouldn’t let it happen without a fight. It can only hurt the small businesses and entrepreneurs who are continually moving into the growing online marketplace, not to mention charities, non-profits, and just regular folks.<br/>Here’s the gist of the open letter’s argument, and it’s hard to find fault with:<br/>The bottom-line is that charging an “email tax” actually gives AOL a financial incentive to degrade email for non-paying senders. This would disrupt the communications of millions who cannot afford to pay your fees-including the non-profits, civic organizations, charities, small businesses, and community mailing lists that have arisen for every topic under the sun and that make email so vital to your subscribers.And what if other Internet service providers retaliate and start demanding their own ransoms to accept mail from your millions of users?<br/>The open letter can be signed off by any concerned netizen. Why not make your voice heard? You can sign the petition here.<br/>Thanks to Chris Pirillo for the heads up. And yes, the word of the day is requisition, a formal written request of a necessity. Not usually used in this context, but I needed a good play on that famous rallying cry of rebellion. <br/>UPDATE: AOL says they don’t care what we think.

How to Avoid the Pollution Plague

<!--[[CDATA<br/--><br/>Seth Godin thinks that the global warming movement could use better copywriters.<br/>Without getting into a debate about the underlying science, Seth uses global warming as an example of how the way a story is told matters more than the underlying facts. He thinks in this case, it boils down to choosing the wrong words when warning of the possibility of catastrophic climate change.<br/>Global is good.<br/>Warm is good.<br/>Even greenhouses are good places.<br/>How can “global warming” be bad?<br/>I’m not being facetious. If the problem were called “Atmosphere cancer” or “Pollution death” the entire conversation would be framed in a different way.<br/>I’d call it “pollution plague” myself (if you hadn’t guessed). Cancer and death are things that happen to individuals, but the plague has ravaged entire civilizations. That’s a story that has a chance of getting people to take action.<br/>The marketing lesson is clear. If a whole bunch of scientists think our current practices may lead to ecological disaster, and everyone pretty much yawns because the story isn’t vivid enough, what happens to a silly little business with a lame story?<br/>We’ve seen that in a competitive situation, the better story tends to win, even sometimes over greater merit. We know that people decide based on emotion, and then justify with logic. And we know that once a certain number of people adopt a story as one they want to hear, there’s a good chance that a lot of others will too.<br/>In today’s business environment, it’s not enough to have a story. It’s got to be a vivid, engaging story that connects at an emotional level. Anything less may well lead to disaster.

<!--[[CDATA<br/--><br/>Just in time for the first update to the Viral Copy section of Copyblogger, the debate about the relevancy of press releases explodes. Let’s take a look, shall we?<br/>Tom Forenski of Silicon Valley Watcher posts Die! Press release! Die! Die! Die!, and characterizes a press release this way:<br/>Press releases are nearly useless. They typically start with a tremendous amount of top-spin, they contain pat-on-the-back phrases and meaningless quotes. Often they will contain quotes from C-level executives praising their customer focus. They often contain praise from analysts, (who are almost always paid or have a customer relationship.) And so on…<br/>No, Tom, that’s a crappy press release. Although you have my sympathy, as I’m sure you saw plenty back in your reporting days.<br/>Steve Rubel chimes in with Everything’s a Press Release, a title that just about sums up his position — he says everything you blog is, in fact, a press release. While I agree with Steve’s sentiment, I take issue with his semantics.<br/>Everything we blog may qualify as public relations, but not everything we blog is a press release. There’s a difference there that’s quite important, as we’ll see.<br/>Finally, Kevin Dugan over at Strategic Public Relations contributes:<br/>It’s the content, not the format, that’s the problem.<br/>Bingo! We have a winner.<br/>Here’s the deal, press releases aren’t dead, but how they’re best used has changed completely, and for the better. A press release is an opportunity to tell a great story about your company, your product, or your blog. What’s more, you can then have that story distributed in a powerful fashion that allows you to connect directly with prospective readers, clients and customers.<br/>And if it also results in either mainstream or new media coverage? Rock on.<br/>The key here is the difference between public relations and publicity. Public relations implies that you have a public to relate with, and that’s who you are speaking to. Preaching to the choir is another way of thinking about it, and I think that analogy applies even to damage control, since the choir gets pretty upset when the preacher disappears with the collection plate (see Enron, Tyco, WorldCom, etc.)<br/>In that sense, blogging is, and should be, the new PR — no doubt about it.<br/>Publicity is something that helps you connect with people who don’t know about you yet, or those who may have heard about you, but are still on the fence. The emerging social media environment allows you to connect with these people in a whole host of ways outside of the mainstream media.<br/>Having a great product or service that gets people talking is key. In the blogosphere, you’re taking the most powerful marketing channel ever (word-of-mouth), and adding the reach and speed of digital communication. The result is word-of-mouth on steroids.<br/>But when you’re just getting started, you need to introduce enough people to what you have to offer before viral word-of-mouth can kick in. People Really Want to Help You

You hear quite a bit about needing to relentlessly focus on “what’s in it for them” in your marketing activities (especially around here).<br/>But I’ve always tended to believe that human nature is not the root problem. Rather, it’s the competition, materialism, scarcity, and cynicism that can result from simply living life that hardens people. And the mass media machine sure hasn’t helped.<br/>The early blogosphere has been built on principles of openness, transparency, and cooperation. People linked freely to one another; sharing conversations and readers. Now, many worry that the spirit of cooperation is doomed. As social media comes to look more like society at large, how can that spirit possibly remain?<br/>Simple. Successful people have conducted business with that spirit long before Al Gore invented the Internet. A strategy of “give, give, give to get” will always work if you maintain it religiously.<br/>New research published last week in the journal Science shows that the somewhat utopian ideals of the blogospere and social media may not be off base. Human nature isn’t the problem; it’s getting back to human nature that’s the challenge.<br/>Psychology researcher Felix Warneken has found that the capacity for altruism (helping someone when there’s nothing to gain) is innate in humans, and emerges in babies at 18 months or even younger. Of course, there’s always something to gain from altruism — it makes us feel good. And you’ll recall that another powerful human psychological trait (reciprocation) rarely allows good deeds to go unrewarded.<br/>Here are some of the key findings of Warneken’s study:<br/>Warneken performed a series of ordinary tasks in front of toddlers, such as hanging towels with clothespins or stacking books. Sometimes he pretended to “struggle” with the tasks, and over and over, each of 24 toddlers offered help within seconds — but only if he appeared to need it.<br/>The toddlers didn’t bother to offer help when Warneken deliberately pulled a book off the stack or threw a pin to the floor.<br/>To be altruistic, babies must have the cognitive ability to understand other people’s goals plus possess what Warneken calls “pro-social motivation,” a desire to be part of a community.<br/>A toddlers’ endearing desire to help out actually signals fairly sophisticated brain development, and is a trait of interest to anthropologists trying to tease out the evolutionary roots of altruism and cooperation.<br/>Here’s what I took away from this new study:<br/>There’s never been a better time to be a bootstrapping entrepreneur using social media to build a business. Don’t hide the fact that you’re winging it on a shoestring, relish in it. People will help promote you if they think you need it, but there’s not a lot of altruistic love for big corporations. Small is the next big thing.<br/>Don’t be a drama queen in an attempt to get promotional help. Manipulating the altruistic tendencies of your clients and customers will get you burned.<br/>Build a community. Encourage interaction at every opportunity with your blog. Jump into your own comments section often, directly answering questions and thanking readers for encouraging words. Answer every email.<br/>It’s up to you to give, give, give. You’re not being altruistic, because you do have something to gain. But you should give like you’ll never get anything back, and simply accept it when on occasions you don’t. You Must Respect My Authority

<!--[[CDATA<br/--><br/>One of my favorite episodes of South Park is when crass little Eric Cartman puts on a police officer’s uniform. He trolls around on his Big Wheel, screaming “Respect my authori-tie!” before bashing people with his baton.<br/>In his quest for authority, Cartman knew what he was doing by putting on that uniform. And given that he was on the giving and receiving end of electric shocks in The South Park Movie, he probably would have loved to participate in the following rather disturbing study.<br/>Shocking Results<br/>You see a newspaper ad saying the psychology department at Yale is running a little “experiment on memory.” Paid volunteers are needed for the hour-long study, so you figure what the heck. Upon arrival at the lab, you meet two men — a research scientist in a lab coat, and another volunteer just like yourself. The researcher proceeds to explain the study to you both.<br/>He tells you that the study is about the effects of punishment on memory. The task of the other volunteer will be to learn a series of word pairings (he’s called the “Learner”). Your job as the “Teacher” will be to test the Learner’s memory of the word pairs, and administer electric shocks for each wrong answer. And also for every wrong answer, the voltage goes up.<br/>You’re not sure about this whole thing, but it must be OK, right? The testing begins, and when the other volunteer misses a question, you pull a lever that delivers a mild shock. Over time, though, the shock levels increase, and the Learner is grunting audibly. At 120 volts, he states that the shocks are really starting to hurt. At 150 volts, he tries to quit.<br/>The researcher tells you to keep going, and that the electricity will cause “no permanent tissue damage” to the Learner. At 165 volts, the Learner screams. You continue questioning and delivering punishment for incorrect answers. At 300 volts, the Learner refuses to respond any longer, as the shocks are impairing his mental capacities. The researcher tells you to treat non-responses as incorrect answers. The Learner is screeching, kicking and pleading for mercy with every subsequent shock, all the way up to 450 volts when the researcher finally stops you.<br/>This couldn’t possibly have really happened, right? Well, actually, it did, in 1963 at Yale, during a series of experiments by Stanley Milgram.<br/>But here’s the real scoop about the Milgram experiment: there were no actual electric shocks; the Learner was an actor; and the study had nothing to do with memory. What Milgram wanted to know was how far the Teachers would go when told to continue to deliver those shocks, since they thought they really were.<br/>About two-thirds (65%) of the subject administered every single shock up to 450 volts, no matter how much the Learner begged for mercy. However, without the researcher’s encouragement to continue, the study found that the test subjects would have stopped giving punishment quite early on. A 2002 meta-analysis of the original data confirms the validity of the findings.<br/>The results shocked the Yale psychology department, and have become a part of modern lore. Every aspect of the experiment had been carefully vetted to pull test subjects from a standard cross section of ages, occupations, and education levels. In other words, these were not sadistic savages, they were people just like you and me. What could possibly lead to this behavior?<br/>Milgram says it’s our deep-seated sense of duty to authority. We’re trained from childhood to respect authority, and the obedience that comes with it stays with us throughout our lives, even when we feel something may not be quite right.<br/>Perception of Authority Matters Most<br/>Our deference to authority is driven mostly by perception. That’s why a lab coat, police officer’s uniform or $4,000 bespoke suit alone can facillitate influence over or control of others. We even act differently toward other people depending on our perception of their authority level, sometimes even adopting their mannerisms and speech patterns.Another study mentioned in Influence: Science and Practice analyzed episodes of Larry King Live, and observed the ability of perceived authority to alter speech patterns. When King interviewed people with great levels of social standing or prestige, his voice style changed to match theirs. When interviewing people of lower status, King remained steadfast, and the voice styles of the guests shifted to match his.<br/>The most important aspect of the data demonstrating the power of authority is that context matters more than actual content. In other words, if a person is perceived as an authority figure, what they say is taken at face value and accepted as fact more readily. It helps someone bypass otherwise common objections. Building authority is therefore crucial to building a business, especially if you are selling services or knowledge products.<br/>Content Creates Context<br/>Good blogging creates authority, plain and simple. Writing consistently about your area of expertise makes you an authority figure within your industry and niche. You will enjoy a definitive advantage over competitors who do not blog, and likely even over those who have been blogging for shorter time periods.<br/>Professionals and other business people have long been writing for trade publications and newspaper columns to build authority, coupled with networking in the community and at trade shows and conferences, all in an attempt to build word-of-mouth referral business. With blogging, you’re building authority and networking all at once, and on a global scale if your business model benefits from that kind of reach.<br/>The goal is not to be on the A-List as determined by the Technorati Top 100 Blogs.
