<br/>This is the seventh post in the Content Connections series.<br/>You know how we feel about digital sharecropping — we’ve strongly cautioned you about not building your business on rented land.<br/>So why do we also tell you that guest blogging is one of the most effective strategies to build your audience?<br/>Odd though it may seem, it’s because providing smart, well-written content on someone else’s site is a great way to efficiently hit a number of audience-growing strategies at the same time. <br/>It’s also robust: unlike certain other strategies, guest blogging will stay strong despite what Google or other titans may do.<br/>And if you tackle it strategically, guest blogging drives traffic (and other benefits) back to your site and builds your audience. <br/>For your consideration today, here are four ways that guest blogging can grow your audience … which means growing your business.<br/>First: How to avoid digital sharecropping<br/>Guest posting takes a lot of work, mental energy, and time. So it’s smart to think about how you can get the most bang for your buck. The more strategically you think when you’re planning out your guest blogging program, the more you’re going to get out of it.<br/>You need to hold two things in your head at the same time — how this post will benefit the host blog, and how it’s going to benefit your own business.<br/>There will be times when you write a guest post to get a single one of the benefits outlined below — maybe to strengthen a relationship with an important content publisher.<br/>But as often as you can, try to include every benefit in this post.<br/>Pro Tip: Before you write a post, make sure you’ll be able to include at least one relevant link to your own content in the body of the post, as well as an audience-friendly call to action in your bio.<br/>1. Guest blogging enhances your authority<br/>When you’re getting started with content marketing, you may be incredibly knowledgeable about your topic — but you have little authority, because no one knows you yet. <br/>Placing posts on other blogs helps your potential audience start to associate your name with high-quality information. And a bit of the authority of your host blog will transfer itself to you.<br/>The more readers see your work, the more authority you will generate. Guest posting allows you to get a relevant, natural link, using the anchor text of your choice, on a site that has excellent search engine authority. <br/>Just remember: as always with SEO copywriting, keep things natural and audience-friendly. <br/>Branding isn’t your company name. <br/>It’s not a tag line. It’s not a logo.<br/>Branding is just another name for creating a perception. <br/>When marketers ask, “How do we want to brand this product?” what they’re really asking is how they want their audience to think about that product once it comes to market.<br/>A brand is a promise. It’s an expectation of an experience.<br/>The company and tag line and logo and brand colors only exist to call that experience to mind.<br/>Brands can meet that expectation, exceed that expectation … or in the worst cases, fall short of that expectation.<br/>(By the way, the word product can easily be swapped for service, or blog, or newsletter, or any number of things marketers promote. The underlying concepts remain the same.) <br/>Volvo’s name is synonymous with safety, which makes it the quintessential consumer example. <br/>Cisco’s “Human Network” stands out among business-to-business brands.<br/>Cisco makes products that make it possible for people to be connected, no matter how far apart they may be, geographically. ~ Forbes<br/>The Red Cross is a bellwether among nonprofits, with a brand that literally means help is on the way in times of crisis. <br/>The very essence of brands doesn’t lie within your brand colors or site design, even though those are important. <br/>The essence of a brand lies within its meaning. In other words, to talk about us. To create a Volvo-like experience where the meaning of our brand comes from how others perceive us.<br/>How do we inspire people to generate content? To talk about us on Facebook and Twitter, to increase our audience? <br/>Increasingly, we inspire our customers with brand experiences and by publishing our own content.<br/>The uninitiated customer is no more inclined to mention a brand than talk to the shy person tucked quietly in the corner at a cocktail party. If we want our customers to engage us, or our products and services, we have to contribute to the conversation. <br/>Content is currency<br/>Today’s web is an endless 24/7 cycle fed by content and social actions. Get Paid What You’re Worth: 37 Negotiation Tactics for Every Freelance Writer

<br/>Do you freak out when you hear the word negotiation?<br/>Does your gut turn, palms sweat, and heart pound when it comes down to talking price? Do you self-medicate with Tums and a tumbler of Wild Turkey? <br/>Trust me. I understand. I’m not a natural born negotiator. I hate conflict. I hate rejection. But if writing is your business I’ve learned this: you have to know how to negotiate. <br/>Making a living depends on it. But it doesn’t have to be hard. <br/>As a web writer and direct-response copywriter I’ve studied negotiation. I’ve studied persuasion. I’ve read the best books on influence and listened to the best podcasts. <br/>In my twelve years as a writer I’ve also participated in hundreds of negotiations — small and large. I’ve used them successfully, and I’ve used them poorly. So I’m not an armchair business philosopher here just spouting advice. <br/>I’m a solider who’s seen combat. And lived to tell about it.<br/>What you’re about to read are thirty-seven negotiation moves that can help you make more money. These are negotiation moves that I’ve used in my career as a freelance writer. <br/>They are easy to understand. The hard part is having the guts to use them (see negotiation move no. 36). <br/>And get this: you don’t have to be a writer to use these tactics. Everyone — no matter their station in life, career or desires — has to negotiate. And it’s a lot more fun (and profitable) when you know how to do it. <br/>So, let’s get started.<br/>1. Think win-win<br/>Negotiation is not a zero-sum game. It’s not a way to manipulate and fleece people. And it’s definitely not a way to make you filthy rich at the expense of other people.<br/>If that is how you view negotiation, then you will not last long.<br/>Negotiations are about building a relationship, so if either side is not happy at the end, then it wasn’t a negotiation. Negotiate until both sides are happy (see no. 30 for an alternative move).<br/>2. Determine what you want to make<br/>Never enter a negotiation without first establishing a position you will be satisfied with.<br/>However, this should NOT be an absolute number. Instead, it should be a range — $2,400 to $2,800 — with an itemized list of essential (read: non-negotiable) and non-essential (I’ll tell you why that is important in a minute) requirements.<br/>Write these down if it helps you to remember. <br/>3. Build value first<br/>Your first task as a negotiator is to show people what you can do. They need to see the value.<br/>For example, say a potential client asks for the cost to write a 1,000 word sales letter for a landing page. Instead of whipping out the cost, explain to her everything you will do: research, dig through analytics, gather testimonials for proof, write a rough draft, present for evaluation, revise and so on.<br/>Make the image in her head of what you do grow, because there is a really good chance it is tiny. <br/>4. Avoid saying price first<br/>After you’ve built the value, next you’ll want to ask: “How much is that worth to you?” If she tells you … good. You know where she stands. You can work with that.<br/>More than likely, though, she’ll tell you she doesn’t know. Either she won’t honestly know because she didn’t do her homework, or she does know but doesn’t want to name her price first.<br/>She wants to see where you stand. So she’ll tell you to go first. If that happens, use the next negotiation move. <br/>5. Always go high<br/>When you are facing a negotiator who refuses to name a price, shrug, and simply go high.<br/>Really high.<br/>And then wait for her response. <br/>6. Suck in your teeth<br/>Sometime a negotiator will be the first to name a price. And if she is a good negotiator she’ll low ball you.<br/>She wants to draw you out. See your financial position. Don’t give in. Instead, flinch.<br/>“Flinch” is the classical term used. I wrote “Suck in Your Teeth” because most of my negotiations happen over the phone or email where people can’t see you. So they need to hear your shock.<br/>In an email, you can simply tell them their offer sounds pretty low. Or tell them they’ll have to do better than that. Then wait. <br/>7. Keep your mouth shut<br/>Silence will eat most people alive.<br/>The silence makes them uncomfortable so they keep talking. And when people are talking they are bound to say something you can use — like their price range. <br/>8. Ask for a budget<br/>Another way to flush out someone’s financial position is to simply ask them if they have a budget.<br/>Yeah. We have a budget.<br/>Okay. What is it?<br/>We have $1,250 set aside for copywriting.<br/>Your job is to decide what work — if any — you will do for that amount. <br/>9. Price each item<br/>Legend has it that a shady Brooklyn optician would sell eye glasses piece by piece. He’d get the buyer to agree on the frames and the price, and then go to ring up the order. The buyer would then ask about the glass and nose piece.<br/>“Oh,” the optician would say, “those cost extra.”<br/>The trick is to get a client to agree on all items before you disclose the final price. Once they are committed it’s hard to say no (see move no. 33).<br/>I don’t like this gambit. I don’t like it used on me and I don’t like to use it. However, I’ve found this move to be effective when a client starts to nibble — you know, “Hey, do you mind adding X while you’re at it?”<br/>Your response: “Sure, I can do it for Y. Are you okay with that?” <br/>10. Recruit a champion<br/>If you can get someone on your side from the other party during a negotiation, then you’ll have a little leverage, if not a lot.<br/>To be honest, almost all of my work has come from knowing someone on the inside. But how exactly do you go about recruiting that champion? It’s a long-term strategy where you use a combination of tools like blogs, Twitter, conferences, and the phone.<br/>And patience.<br/>You might get a regular follower on your blog. You trade emails, tweets, meet him at a conference. He introduces you to someone else. You do a little work for him. And then he introduces you to someone else.<br/>Bingo: work out the wazoo. <br/>11. Float a trial balloon<br/>You’ve seen this tactic in action …<br/>News about a particular political action is “leaked.” The goal is to get the public’s reaction to the idea. NY Governor Cuomo did this recently with gas drilling.<br/>Some speculate that Google’s Glass Project, which amounted to a video concept, was a trial balloon. They’re basically looking to see if there is mass appeal.<br/>Have an idea you’re not sure how a potential client will react? Float a trial balloon. Just say, “Hey, what do you think about X?” Then wait for their reaction. <br/>12. Slice it up<br/>Early in my career I used to approach companies and offer to re-write their web content. Not many people bit, but when they did, they always asked about price. Happy to have someone interested, I’d build value and then drop the bomb on them.<br/>Most of the time they flinched … and never called or emailed back.<br/>I learned instead to slice the project down into easy-to-swallow chunks. This enticed them to hire me. As I delivered on my smaller promises and built trust, I simply asked for more.<br/>And it came. <br/>13. Go half way<br/>Remember when I said from the start that a successful negotiation was a win-win situation? Well, this is a strategy that can help you overcome that relationship-spoiling gridlock.<br/>The idea is to demonstrate that you’re willing to concede the balance of a difference.<br/>For example, if your gig requires travel, offer to split the difference of those expenses, keeping the deal alive.<br/>If it is worth it, go half way. <br/>14. Pad the deal<br/>The more working parts to a negotiation means the more options you have when it comes to conceding.<br/>Bulk up on conditions. However, the trick is knowing what’s essential and what’s not.<br/>For example, “I can’t do this job without direct access to your data. Oh, you don’t allow that? Well, while it’s not my normal policy, I guess I can be hand fed that info.”<br/>Keep this in mind: you are only conceding on non-essentials. Don’t budge on the essentials (see move no. 2). <br/>15. Resist short time frames<br/>Imagine you get a mover and shaker on the phone. She wants to talk to you about a writing project. You are stoked! You say hi, she says hi, and then jumps right into the negotiation.<br/>You can tell this will be a short phone call. A very short one.<br/>Never negotiate under that kind of pressure. False deadlines will trip you up. Instead, politely interrupt, point out that you can tell she’s busy and ask if there is a better time to talk when she has more time. Or just ask for more time. <br/>16. Find space to think<br/>Say she says, “No, there isn’t a better time.” She’s polite, but firm. She’s a great negotiator.<br/>You shrug, go on with the call. You make an offer, she counters immediately and you are not sure what you should do next. Is that a good offer? Are you missing something?<br/>Probably.<br/>All you need is more time to think. Tell her you need to use the bathroom. Your dog is on fire. Or pretend like the call is breaking up.<br/>Whatever you do, get space to think before you agree to anything. <br/>17. Change the negotiator<br/>Another way to deal with a difficult negotiator (which can also mean superior negotiator) is to reset the rules by speaking to someone else.<br/>This works great if you are dealing with a start up or small company where there are two founders. If one is proving impossible, ask to speak to the other. <br/>18. Shift their benchmarks<br/>Ever had a potential client trot out their perfect solution — and it wasn’t you? In fact, it’s your competitor.<br/>But who or what they trot out doesn’t matter. You’ve been given valuable information. They’ve just shown you their standard to which they judge all others.<br/>Your job is to change that standard. “You know that guy knows nothing about online marketing, don’t you? Zero experience. I’ve got twelve.” <br/>19. Check the facts<br/>This tactic works lock-step with the one above (no. 18). If you can trot out a fact or evidence that questions their claims or backs up yours, then you are on your way to turning the tables in your favor.<br/>Listen: I’m not suggesting you approach this like a jerk. Don’t laugh or taunt. You’ll shut them down. How you trot out these specific facts is just as important as what you trot out.<br/>Oh, I can totally understand why you would believe that. But did you know that if you look into their data, X doesn’t actually do what they say? There was a huge scandal in TechCrunch …<br/>Objective facts will change the game in your favor. Do your homework.<br/>20. Control the agenda<br/>There is more than one way to skin a cat. And there is more than one way to spoil a good negotiation.<br/>Anarchy is one of them.<br/>Anarchy is what you get when nobody is in control of the meeting. Recently I was involved on a project with a team of really smart people. Unfortunately, we accomplished little because there was no agenda.<br/>The next time we met, however, I volunteered to take the meeting notes. And demanded we determine what we wanted to accomplish in the next ninety minutes. Once that was determined, I held them to those goals.<br/>It was an efficient and effective meeting because I established rules that we were all expected to follow. <br/>21. Trot out credentials<br/>Hands down, if you have two candidates with equal experience, skills and education, but one has a degree from Harvard and the other one from a small college in Montana, the person from Harvard is going to get the job.<br/>This may not seem fair, but it’s life.<br/>Live with it, and get those endorsements. <br/>22. Push them against deadlines<br/>Deadlines are great tools for getting people off of their duffs. It works in copywriting, and it also works in selling yourself in a negotiation.<br/>Pretend you just finished a project and you’ve got about three weeks before you start your next one. Email some past clients and say, “Hey Name, now might be a good time to write that sales page we talked about. I’m free for the next three weeks. After that I won’t be able to get to it for four months.”<br/>You’re bound to get a bite or two.<br/>23. Build tension with delays<br/>This is just a variation of “Ask for Time.” Most people in negotiations want out of the situation as soon as possible. They’re busy or hate the conflict.<br/>Whatever the reason, use that momentum.<br/>There is an exquisite example of the effective use of delays in the book You Can Negotiate Anything. The author, Herb Cohen, is working against a presumed deadline—his flight leaves at noon on Monday. The other party knew this and delayed until the eleventh hour. Cohen is exasperated at this point and basically gives away the farm.<br/>The lesson: get a new flight home. <br/>24. Present a bleak picture<br/>This is a variation of the Pain-Agitate-Solve formula. Identify with their pain point, and then tell them how awful it’s going to be if they don’t do anything about it.<br/>You know, I can totally understand your desire to preserve your cash in this economy. But freezing your marketing budget will only dry up your pipeline, and that’s not what you want to do when your current customers start bailing because they can’t afford your service.<br/>At that point connect the dots for him: you are the solution to his problems.<br/>25. Pull out your empty pockets<br/>Your favorite uncle hears you’re a copywriter. He’s got a business. He recycles road kill fur into fun little hats for children. He doesn’t understand why, but he’s not making any money. He hears you are a copywriter and offers to hire you.<br/>What do you do?<br/>You refuse him. But you do it politely. “Uh, yeah, you know I just can’t help you. That’s out of my field. I don’t have the knowledge.”<br/>See, it’s not about desire. It’s about ability. You just don’t have it.<br/>26. Use “we” and never “I”<br/>This is technical and minor, but it works.<br/>When discussing projects with clients I always use the word “we” and not “I.” My goal is to demonstrate to them that I’m in this for the long haul. I’m not a hired gun. I’m a partner.<br/>This changes the scene from a win-lose to a win-win. My buy-in proves that my success equals their success, which communicates that I’m going to work hard for them. <br/>27. Appeal to fame or greed<br/>If you open the right hand drawer of my desk one of the first things you’ll see is a box of old business cards.<br/>Open the box, pull out a card and you’ll see on the front the standard fare: name, address and so on. Flip the card over and you’ll see this tag line: “I can make you rich, powerful or famous.” I then list ways in which I can do that.<br/>My wife hates that business card. Thinks it’s tacky. But it works. Look at Ramit Sethi’s I Will Teach You to Be Rich. He’s built an empire in teaching people how to solve their financial problems. And so can you. <br/>28. Flatter the other party<br/>Okay. This is a cheap trick. But it works. And to be honest, people know it works — and they don’t care. They like their egos stroked.<br/>Point out how beautiful the website is.<br/>Compliment her on her name or her nose (okay, maybe not her nose).<br/>Just say something nice. It will go a long way. <br/>29. Say “I’m not happy”<br/>This is a basic building block to negotiations. You should say this throughout the process until you reach a point you can accept, and both sides are happy.<br/>But you can also use this after the negotiations are over and you’re plowing through the work.<br/>You know, this is taking me a lot longer to do because of X, Y and Z, which were added later. I’m not making any money now. We need to revisit our terms.<br/>Notice I didn’t actually come right out and say “I’m not happy.” I just stated the facts. Not a single whiff of emotion. <br/>30. Don’t commit to promises of paradise<br/>Sneaky people like to trade on promises of paradise.<br/>You know, we can’t pay you now. But if this works out, we’ll have a whole lot more work for you. Like a lifetime’s worth. And plenty of champagne and lobster for an army.<br/>Run away. Run far, far away (see move no. 37). <br/>31. Pit mom against dad<br/>Parents will recognize this ploy instantly. Child complains that dad is being mean. Mom tells dad to stop being mean (this can go either way — mom being mean and so on).<br/>Any power the parents had together is effectively diminished. This works in the business world, too.<br/>If you are dealing with two or more people on the side of negotiation, introduce information that might get them quibbling with each other. Could be statistics or a study that demonstrates one of them is wrong. You gain position when the other side is divided. <br/>32. Talk to decision makers<br/>Before you begin negotiating ask, “Will you be the person making the decision on this?”<br/>If they say no, then ask who will be making the decision. Then ask if you can talk to that person.<br/>If that’s not possible, then you may just have to deal with it. But that’s okay. You’ve got 36 other moves you can use. <br/>33. Get the other side to commit<br/>Commitment is a strong negotiation tactic. It’s one of the six principles of influence Cialdini taught us in his book.<br/>Here’s how it works: start with a small commitment. Just make it a simple yes or no.<br/>“Do you want this by Friday?”<br/>“Do you want me to write a companion Facebook post?”<br/>“Do you want this in Word?”<br/>All of these smaller commitments will lead to an easier larger commitment when it comes to closing the deal.<br/>Why does this work? People who start something do not like to appear inconsistent. They want to finish what they started.<br/>It takes effort and humility to break off a commitment. What will the other side think of you? The trick is to not care (see the second-to-last tactic). <br/>34. Work it like a call girl<br/>Not really.<br/>The point is to avoid getting stiffed on the back end by asking for payment up front. Just make it part of your non-negotiables (see no. 2)<br/>If asking for all of the moula up front is too strong, request half. <br/>35. Be confident<br/>One of the best ways to lose a negotiation is to be insecure. You’ll either get taken advantage of or you’ll agree to terms you don’t like because you are too scared to state your terms.<br/>Plus, your objections or statements may not instill confidence if the other party senses you are insecure. They’ll wonder if you can even pull off the job.<br/>Raise your chin and your voice. Look people in the eye. State clearly and concisely want you want. And don’t flinch (unless it’s appropriate). <br/>36. Stop caring about the outcome<br/>Remember the last time you were a nervous wreck? Maybe it was before a first date or first interview. More than likely you really wanted this date or interview to work out.<br/>You really cared about it.<br/>Now think about the last time you sauntered into an interview, ate all the peanuts from a jar on the table and stared at the ceiling. The outcome didn’t matter to you. So you were relaxed and confident.<br/>That sort of indifference will not only help you to think clearly, but it will also allow you to pull off one of the best negotiation moves ever.<br/>See the last move … <br/>37. Walk away<br/>In the end, after all options have been exhausted and you’re still not happy, exit the negotiation.<br/>Get up, and walk away.<br/>Of course, this means you have to have options. If you’re desperate, then walking away will not help. If you’re emotionally tied to the outcome, then the other party has a hook in your nose. You can’t walk away.<br/>I cannot tell you how powerful it is to be able to shrug your shoulders and say, “Well, I guess this isn’t going to work out. Talk to you later.” It’s a good place to be in.<br/>In conclusion …<br/>Let me make a suggestion to you: print this out. I know it’s long, and will eat a lot of paper, but it will pay you back anytime you find yourself on the other end of a negotiation. <br/>And trust me. That can happen at just about any time. <br/>You could find yourself working through a blog post, look down and see a client’s name show up on the screen. You pick up and start talking. And you realize he’s just made you some kind of offer. That’s happened to me more times than I can count. <br/>And let me repeat: while this advice is directed towards writers, anyone can benefit. 7 Social Psychology Studies to Help You Convert Prospects into Paying Customers

<br/>When it comes to converting more prospects into paying customers, it all boils down to how well you understand your buyer’s mind and what they want from your business.<br/>The thing is, your time can’t scale in every circumstance, and there may come a point where you aren’t able to know each and every one of your customers personally. When that’s the case, what’s to be done?<br/>The answer is to turn to rigorously tested research in social psychology.<br/>We’re all different, but in many instances our brains are prone to respond in a very similar manner, and understanding these common elements in the human mind can help you find more ways to ethically move more buyers towards saying “Yes!” to your products or services.<br/>Below you’ll find 7 such studies that will help you understand what makes many of your customers “tick”, and what you can do to create a more effective selling experience.<br/>1. Play the devil’s advocate<br/>Are you familiar with how the term “devil’s advocate” came to exist? It’s actually from an old process the Roman Catholic church used to conduct when canonizing someone into sainthood.<br/>A lawyer of sorts was instructed to be the devil’s advocate for the candidate, taking a skeptical view of their character in an attempt to find holes in their arguments for why they should be considered.<br/>The marketing world has an important lesson to learn from this process.<br/>According to research by social psychologist Charlan Nemeth (and his colleagues), the role of devil’s advocate certainly plays a part in persuasion, but it is not one of creating dissent.<br/>Nemeth concluded that when people are confronted with someone who truly appears to oppose their position (true dissenters), they begin to try and understand their perspective.<br/>Those playing devil’s advocate? They actually increase the effectiveness of the original argument! This is because group members do not take the critiques from the devil’s advocate as seriously, and since the group is now bringing up (and dismissing) possible alternatives or flaws, they are more confident in their original stance.<br/>For marketers, this offers an opportunity: playing devil’s advocate for your own products can actually enhance your persuasive efforts as people see their concerns addressed (and dismissed) before they buy.<br/>The Takeaway: Playing the role of devil’s advocate has been found to increase people’s resolve in their decision making, not hinder it. Be your own devil’s advocate and back up typical objections with solutions for your offerings.<br/>2. Use urgency … the smart way<br/>Creating a sense of urgency in your copy is one of the oldest tricks in the book … and still one of the smartest. To top it off, Cialdini lists “scarcity” as one of the 6 pillars of influence, and it’s easy to see why: great demand leads to great sales.<br/>In spite of this, I have some research that explains how urgency can completely backfire on you and ruin your meticulously written copy.<br/>How can this be? More importantly, how can you prevent it from happening to you?<br/>The research comes to us from a classic study by Howard Leventhal where he analyzed the effects of handing out tetanus brochures to subjects.<br/>Leventhal handed out 2 different pamphlets to participants, both sparing no detail on the horrid effects that the tetanus disease can have on the body.<br/>The difference was that the control group received a version of the pamphlet that had the effects of the disease … and nothing else.<br/>The second group received a similar pamphlet, but theirs had minimal information that indicated where they could schedule an appointment to get vaccinated.<br/>The results?<br/>Those who had the second pamphlet (with the sparse follow-up info) were much more likely to take-action: the rate that they followed through to get vaccinated was vastly superior to the first group. They were also more engaged with the tetanus information they received.<br/>Why?<br/>Even though the follow-up information provided in the second pamphlet wasn’t at all comprehensive, Leventhal concluded that our minds are susceptible to blocking out information that evokes a sense of urgency if there aren’t any instructions regarding what to do next.<br/>Those in the first group were prone to convincing themselves that, “I don’t need to worry about this because it won’t happen to me anyway,” whereas those in the second group had less incentive to feel this way because they had a plan to take action and couldn’t put it aside as easy.<br/>The Takeaway: Urgency can be “blocked” by your customers minds if you don’t give them specific instructions on how to solve the problem that you’ve identified. Don’t give vague instructions, tell your audience exactly what to do when the time comes.<br/>3. Highlight strengths by admitting your shortcomings<br/>Is it ever a good idea to admit to your faults? After all, people don’t really want the “real” you, right?<br/>Research from social psychologist Fiona Lee would assert that it is, and in fact, it may be the best strategic decision to highlight your strengths.<br/>The study she conducted looked at companies who admitted to missteps and examined what effect (if any) these admissions had on stock prices. Lee and her colleagues had experimenters read one of two fictitious company reports (both reports listed reasons why the company had performed “poorly” last year).<br/>The first report placed emphasis on strategic decisions. The second placed emphasis on external events (economic downturn, increased competition, etc.).<br/>So what were the results?<br/>The test subjects viewed the first company far more favorably than the second.<br/>Interestingly, Lee found (after examining hundreds of these types of statements, over 14 real companies) that the companies who admitted to their strategic faults also had higher stock prices the following year.<br/>Her conclusions were that admitting to shortcomings in areas like strategic thinking showcased that a company was still in control, despite their faults. Blaming external forces (even if true) created a sense that the company didn’t have the ability to fix the problem (or were creating excuses).<br/>The Takeaway: Customers still don’t want you to overshare irrelevant details. But admitting to honest errors helps your customers understand that you are in control of the situation and not prone to making excuses. <br/>4. Embrace the power of labels<br/>You might think I’m referring to brand labels, but far from it: I’m telling you to label your customers!<br/>Sounds like bad advice, right?<br/>WRONG!<br/>As it turns, the research has shown us that people like being labeled, and they are more likely to particpate in the “group’s” message if they feel included in it.<br/>The study examined the voting patterns of adults to see if labeling them had any effect on their turnout at the polls.<br/>After being casually questioned about their normal voting patterns, half of the particpants were told that they were much more likely to vote since they had been deemed to be more politically active.<br/>(This wasn’t actually true, these people were selected at random)<br/>The other half of participants weren’t told anything.<br/>Despite this random selection, the group that was told they were “politically active” had a 15% higher turnout than the other group!<br/>Our brain seeks to maintain a sense of consistency (even if it’s artificial), and this is why the foot-in-the-door technique works so well even on prepared minds. We enjoy being consistent so much that if we feel apart of a group by being told that we are, it’s still likely to affect our response.<br/>For instance, smart people are obviously going to be interested in an internet marketing course that’s made for smart people, right? The label is at work to make you realize you’re part of a desirable group.<br/>The Takeaway: Even when given an artificial connection, people tend to take action in order to maintain a consistent image if they are labeled as being apart of a group. Don’t be afraid to label, people like being members of groups that they approve of.<br/>5. Make their brain light up “instantly”<br/>There are few things that our brains love more than immediate stimulation.<br/>As a matter of fact, research has shown that instant gratification is such a powerful force that an ability to control against it is a great indicator of achieving success.<br/>Wow!<br/>In terms of your customers, you’re actually looking to do the opposite: in this case the gratification is about getting instantly rewarded by doing business with you, and your copy should remind customers of this benefit at every turn.<br/>When your customers are on the verge of purchasing a product from you (or about to sign up for your email list), they are heavily influenced by how quickly they can receive their desired outcome.<br/>Several Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) studies, including one on nicotine addiction, have shown that our frontal cortex is highly active when we think about “waiting” for something.<br/>On the other hand, our mid-brain is the one that lights up when we think about receiving something right away (that’s the one we want to fire up!).<br/>Words like “instant”, “immediately”, or even just “fast” are known to flip the switch on that mid-brain activity that makes us so anxious to buy.<br/>Researchers have noted that the key to these words is that they allow us to envision our problem being solved right away; whatever pain point we are seeking to fix by buying becomes more enticing if we know we won’t have to wait very long.<br/>The Takeaway: Our brains love “instant gratification” and light up when thinking about eliminating pain points instantly. Let people know that they will be rewarded quickly and they will be more likely to make the purchase.<br/>6. Know how to sell to your 3 types of buyers<br/>Every business (no matter the industry) is going to have to deal with the 3 types of buyers out there.<br/>All other aspects aside, these 3 groups are defined by the “pain” that they receive when purchasing something. Neuroscientists have defined human spending patterns as a process of “spend ’til it hurts!”, so understanding these different levels of paint points is essential to increasing your sales.<br/>According to the research, all customers are grouped into the following categories:<br/>Tightwads (24%) – people that spend less (on average) before they hit their limit<br/>Unconflicted (61%) – average spenders<br/>Spendthrifts (15%) – people that are able to spend more before they hit their limit<br/>Guess who the hardest group of people to sell to is? Since they take up nearly a quarter of your potential customers, you should learn some of the smart techniques to minimize buying pain for your “tightwad” customers.<br/>Fortunately, the secret boils down to utilizing well-written copy.<br/>According to some remarkable neuroimaging studies, minimizing buying pain for “tightwads” (and everybody else) can be accomplished successfully by incorporating the following strategies…<br/>1. Re-frame the value<br/>If I told you that my product costs $1,000 a year, you’d definitely approach with a little hesitation, right?<br/>Right. That’s because $1,000 isn’t peanuts.<br/>What if I told you instead that my product costs $84 a month? Not bad right? If you got enough utility out of it for your business (or for yourself) every month, it would be a very worthy purchase.<br/>The thing is, that’s the same as $1,000 a year!<br/>If you’re offering something that has a recurring cost or that could be broken down into smaller increments, look into how you might be able to incorporate this into your pricing.<br/>2. Reduce pain points through bundling<br/>Neuroeconomics expert George Loewenstein has noted that all customers (but especially conservative spenders) prefer to avoid purchasing multiple accessories if there is an option to complete their purchase in one swoop.<br/>He cites our willingness to upgrade from different car packages, but how difficult it is for the brain to justify each individual upgrade (“Yes, I will pay extra for the navigation… and leather seats… and…”, etc).<br/>Lowenstein would assert that these individual purchases create individual pain points, whereas a bundled purchase creates only one pain point, even if the price is much higher.<br/>3. Sweat the small stuff<br/>We know that “don’t sweat the small stuff” isn’t all that applicable to copywriting, but just how small of a change matters?<br/>In what I’ve named the goofiest bump in a conversion rate that I’ve ever seen, research from Carnegie Mellon University University reveals to us that even a single word can affect conversions.<br/>Researchers changed the description of an overnight shipping charge on a free DVD trial offer from “a $5 fee” to “a small $5 fee” and increased the response rate among tightwads by 20 percent!<br/>Has the word “small” ever felt so big? With a single added word increasing conversions by that amount, I think it’s safe to say that the devil is definitely in the details.<br/>The Takeaway: No matter what business you’re in, you will always have 3 types of customers. Know how to sell to tightwads, they make up a large base of your potential buyers and you can reduce their buying pain with the right choice of words.<br/>7. Make an enemy<br/>In the business world, meaningful connections are paramount to your success.<br/>That being said, you still need an enemy.<br/>Why? When could this ever be a good thing?<br/>Turns out, it’s a great thing if you’re looking to achieve a cult-like addiction for your brand.<br/>In a hightly controversial study entitled Social categorization and intergroup behaviour, social psychologist Henri Tajifel began his research trying to define just how human beings were able to engage in acts of mass hatred (such as the Holocaust).<br/>His findings were shocking to say the least.<br/>Tajifel found that he could create groups of people that would show loyalty to their in-group and outright discriminate against outsiders … all with the most trivial of distinctions!<br/>In the tests, subjects were asked to choose between two objects or people that they had no relation to (one test had people picking between 2 painters). Despite these trivialities, when it came time to dole out REAL rewards, subjects had a huge bias towards their in-group and avoided handing out rewards to the so-called “other guys.”<br/>Sounds an awful lot like big companies going toe-to-toe, doesn’t it? Like the Mac vs. PC commercials or Miller Lite taking potshots at un-manly light beers.<br/>The thing is, you don’t need a physical enemy, you need to be against a belief or an idea. Copyblogger would assert that real publishers are self-hosted and that well-written content is the centerpiece of the web.<br/>Solidifying your unique selling proposition is as much about deciding who your ideal customer is not as much as it is about defining who they are.<br/>The Takeaway: You’ll never find your brand’s true voice without something to stand against. How to Beat 7 Common Self-Publishing Fears

<br/>Maybe you’ve watched other bloggers launch their ebooks, and you want to do the same — but something’s holding you back.<br/>You probably already know the benefits of publishing an ebook …<br/>Establishing yourself as an expert author<br/>Finally making real money from your blog<br/>Creating a low-priced product to draw new customers in<br/>You keep telling yourself that you will write an ebook someday … just not yet. And it’s almost certainly the case that one of the seven common fears in this article is holding you back.<br/>Staying stuck isn’t any fun, so let’s get right to it …<br/>Fear #1: I’m not ready<br/>This is the biggest worry I hear from bloggers: I’m not ready. <br/>All too often, the bloggers saying this are more than ready. <br/>They’ve been blogging for six months, or a year, or longer. <br/>Or they’re subject matter experts. <br/>Or they’ve been writing for years or even decades.<br/>Even if the longest thing you’ve written so far is a blog post, you probably are ready (or at least a lot closer to ready than you think).<br/>Tip: Pick a date when you will begin your ebook, however unready you feel. Put it in your calendar. <br/>Fear #2: I don’t know what to write about<br/>This fear comes in two forms:<br/>I have no ideas at all<br/>I have so many ideas, I don’t know which to pick<br/>The best way forward is to ask your audience. <br/>Give them a list of your potential ideas and ask them to vote on their favorites. Even better, ask them what they’re struggling with, using open-ended questions.<br/>Tip: Though open-ended questions are always best, you can use SurveyMonkey to run a multiple choice survey — it’s free at the basic level, and quick and simple for your audience to use.<br/>Fear #3: Nobody will buy it<br/>No writer wants to pour weeks of work into an ebook … only to find that sales are zero (or as close as makes no difference).<br/>I can’t guarantee that your readers will buy your ebook. But if you’ve written what they want to read (see #2) instead of what you think they want, they’re very likely to snap it up.<br/>You don’t have to sell hundreds of copies during your launch, either. Ebooks never go off: they can stay on a virtual shelf for months or years, bringing in regular income.<br/>Tip: Don’t spend months and months on your ebook. Write something short, and aim to complete it within a couple of months — or try the 30 Day ebook plan here.<br/>Fear #4: It won’t be good enough<br/>Perhaps you’re worried you don’t know enough. Perhaps you think your writing isn’t up to scratch. This fear is one that pretty much every first-time ebook writer suffers. (And plenty of umpteenth-time writers still find it hard to beat.)<br/>Remember, your ebook doesn’t have to be the last word on your subject. <br/>In fact, it’s much better (for you and your audience) to write an ebook that tackles one single topic — not one that aims to be the only ebook they’ll ever need.<br/>Also, you don’t have to go it alone. <br/>Maybe there are a couple of chapters in your plan that fall outside of your personal experience. You can research those, interview an expert, or even ask someone else to contribute text for them.<br/>Tip: Ask fellow writers, or some members of your audience, to act as “beta-readers.” Get them to comment on your draft, and use their comments and suggestions to improve it. <br/>Fear #5: I don’t understand the technology<br/>If you’ve only just got to grips with WordPress, the thought of mastering the technology behind ebooks might put you off starting.<br/>The great news is that ebooks are relatively easy to produce. <br/>If you’re going to sell your ebook through your own blog, you can simply make a .pdf file that readers can view on their computer. (And you can hire a designer to make it look great.)<br/>If you want to get your ebook into major online stores, like Amazon, there are a few extra steps to take — but these are by no means insurmountable.<br/>Amazon’s KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) is straightforward to use, and Smashwords will help you format your ebook for distribution to other online stores.<br/>Tip: There are plenty of individuals, plus companies like BookBaby, that can take your ebook manuscript and format it for you. Shop around and ask for recommendations.<br/>Fear #6: I don’t have a big list<br/>Yes, an email list is a powerful way to sell products … but you don’t need to build a huge list before you can create your first ebook.<br/>Even if your list only has a few dozen members — or if you don’t have a list at all — you can publish an ebook. <br/>You can use other techniques, like guest posting, to get the word out there, and build up your list over time. After all, if you write the ebook first, you’ll have something for new members to buy.<br/>Tip: Use a free chapter or two from your ebook as a sign-up incentive for your email list. This not only gives them a reason to join your list, it also helps nudge them towards buying.<br/>Fear #7: I hate the idea of marketing<br/>Some people are natural marketers: confident, charismatic, and with an instinctive grasp of what benefits will entice their audience.<br/>Others — probably most of us! — find marketing uncomfortable at first. <br/>Marketing may not come naturally to you, but you’re perfectly capable of it. Marketing your ebook simply means letting people know what it can do for them. <br/>Some of your audience will decide not to buy, of course: perhaps they don’t need that particular book, or they don’t feel they have time to use it right now. <br/>Others, though, will be delighted that you’re produced exactly what they need.<br/>Tip: Focus on your audience in your marketing. <br/>ProBlogger’s Darren Rowse chimes in with an excellent, balanced addition to the growing debate over traditional SEO as applied to blogs. This is the topic that I commented on with SEO Copywriting is Dead, which built upon a couple of posts by Nick Wilson of Performancing and was pushed further along by Steve Pavlina.<br/>Darren is always a diplomat, but here his even-handedness is especially welcome. While demonstrating both sides of the story, I think he actually makes a stronger case for writing for humans first.<br/>He points out that blogs are pretty well optimized to be search engine friendly right out of the box, due to “good URL structures, interlink(ing) well within the site (via categories) and (being) regularly updated…” And of course writing for humans pulls in the gold of the Internet — one way links from others.<br/>Keywords in headlines definitely help, and Darren rightly points out that for bloggers with an advertising business model, search traffic is crucial to revenue. I just don’t believe you need keyword stuffing in your body text, and you shouldn’t sacrifice a compelling headline in favor of search traffic you may or may not get.<br/>I primarily write for people selling products and services, although any blogger can benefit from good copywriting (unless you don’t like traffic).
